REVEREND RODWELL CLOSED the door and pressed his head against it. That Ripley woman was beginning to annoy him. Perhaps it had been foolhardy to invite her to the group meeting tomorrow, but Simon had agreed it was safer for Megan if they kept Ripley firmly in their sights and managed any future meetings themselves.

Simon had been so pleased with himself for interrupting her session with Megan. What had Anne been thinking? She was too naïve—that was the problem. She couldn’t be trusted alone with a woman like Ripley.

It was so frustrating that Megan had gone downhill again. Anne was nervous enough about the group meeting as it was, without Megan getting sick now.

Perhaps they should cancel the group meeting. Megan’s health had been in a slump for a while, and though the paramedics were confident it was just a blip, perhaps he could use it as an excuse to stop Dr Ripley getting too close. He didn’t want her picking through their business. There were a few loose ends that would need tidying up before the charity came under much more scrutiny. He was damned if he would let a busybody like Alex Ripley ruin this for him.

Simon was right to be cautious, but he’d finally agreed to Rodwell’s plan to invite Dr Ripley along to the group session where they could control her better. If they played their cards right, they may even get her to endorse Megan’s gift. Now wouldn’t that be a turn up for the books? He could see the headlines now. “Alex Ripley, Miracle Detective, confirms divine intervention in sleepy Rhosfaelog.” He’d be covered in glory.

“Have the doctors gone, then?”

He looked up to see Anne standing in the corridor, hands wringing her skirt nervously. God, she’s such a worrier. He smiled and walked towards her, reaching his hand out to take hers.

“They’re gone,” he said soothingly. “Everything’s fine.”

“They were in with her for ages,” she said.

“Come on,” he deflected. “Let’s have a nice cup of tea, eh? You heard them, she’s fine. They were just being thorough. That’s what we pay them for.”

What we pay them far too much for.

She smiled at him, watery eyed.

“She’s fine, Anne. Just a little tired, is all. It’s been a busy time for her recently. Takes a lot of her energy doesn’t it. And she’s probably picking up on your worries too. What with all this break-in business.”

“But, what if she did something to her, Francis? What if she came here to do what her friend couldn’t?”

“Shush,” he said, placing a finger gently on her lips. It made him shudder inside. “You were silly to let her in, Anne. You can’t trust everyone. Especially not someone like her.”

“I know. I just thought that if the Vatican trusts her enough to pay for her opinion, it would be perfect if she could see Megan’s gift for herself.”

She’s such a fool.

“Megan’s just tired. She’ll be right as rain tomorrow.”

“But..”

“No. That’s enough,” he said, more harshly this time. “Now you need to calm down and stop worrying.
